From 0.1 million to 6.5 million: Haji Sons’ Seeds Continue to Uplift Small Farmers

“We had to plant the seed thrice due to heavy rains,” said Muhammad Jat in an interview, “but still managed to meet production by the new year’s beginning.”

Pakistani farmers using the hybrid tomato seed called “Rani” by Haji Sons have managed to not only buffer the losses incurred following heavy rains in early October in Sindh but have also earned a profit through speedy production. Dost Muhammad Jat happens to be one of these farmers. “We had to plant the seed thrice due to heavy rains,” said Muhammad Jat in an interview, “but still managed to meet production by the new year’s beginning.”

Rani seed, like most hybrids stocked with Haji Sons, promises an increased yield (of 1250 tonnes per acre) with better quality in terms of size and color.

On his farm of 70 acres, Dost Muhammad has grown Rani’s production from 5 to 10 acres, moving away from other varieties of tomatoes within the space of three years. The crop grows in a space of 4 months, allowing plantation twice a year.

Incurring a cost of 0.1 million rupees on inputs such as irrigation via tubewell and fertilizers, Dost Muhammad successfully earned revenue of 6.5 million rupees last year. Like many others, this farmer has earned an exceptionally high return of 665% on his investment without incurring storage costs. “As was in the case of the last couple of years, we sold our crop in Peshawar this year as well,” commented Dost Muhammad.

Due to heavy rains that hit Sindh in October 2009, many farmers found their lands flooded. Dost Muhammad himself had to sow Rani seeds thrice before they were harvested in late December. It is due to this seed’s ability to give a high production that he is still hopeful of receiving a remarkable return in the new year on his additional investment.

“We are grateful that we were able to help small farmers like Dost Muhammad. Stories like his continues to be a motivational driver at Haji Sons. We’ll continue to abide by our mission of uplifting small farmers,” commented Farhan Tahir, the Business Development Manager of the firm.
